It is news when the creator of Studs Lonigan and Danny O'Neill, who also depicted for future generations the lower middle class life of the Irish in Chicago, turns to another background for a major work of fiction. James Farrell has deserted neither his realism nor his interest in himself but he has changed the background of his novels from Chicago to New York.
