When Opportunity Knocks

Did you ever hear the old adage "Chance favors the prepared mind"? Louis Pasteur coined it when he made an important discovery by accident. To my knowledge, Pasteur never had a drinking problem, but many AA members can perhaps find real meaning for themselves in his words. How many times during our stinking-thinking and destructive-drinking days did we pass up opportunity after opportunity because our minds were not receptive?

Mark Twain once said, "Fortune knocks at every man's door once in a life, but in a good many cases, the man is in a neighboring saloon and does not hear." We may not have been specifically in a saloon before we came into AA, but we were in a prison of our own making. When we begin trying to live the AA program of recovery, our minds become prepared and receptive. We then have a choice of accepting or rejecting any chances or opportunities that come our way.
