The Director of Health Education for the American Medical Association tells how the physician can help the drunk to seek recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous

Now THAT alcoholism is widely regarded by the medical profession as a disease, and the public is coming more slowly to the same appreciation, it is but natural that more and more alcoholics will be seeking medical treatment. In the nature of things, they will probably gravitate to the offices of the general practitioner. Despite the advance of specialism, there are many more general practitioners than specialists. Since the particular specialty which has most to offer the alcoholic is psychiatry, and since there are far too few psychiatrists to service the growing appreciation of their contributions, it is all the more likely that the alcoholic will seek treatment from the GP.
