Booze and creativity do not mix, this eminent writer found--the hard way

ALL DAY I had been sitting slumped in the chair, staring at the typewriter. I hadn't touched a key. Nothing would come out of the head, in spite of the job at hand which was non-fiction--research all done and notes laid out, ready to go. Waves of panic had rolled over me and the goblin voices kept whispering, "This is all, brother. You've had it. You're dead."
