THE THERAPEUTIC value of anonymity was not immediately realized by the earliest members of Alcoholics Anonymous. In the Big Book, there are only three references to anonymity. Originally, anonymity was intended to protect the members' reputations from the cultural stigma attached to the disease of alcoholism; it was simply a matter of secrecy.
