When Anyone Reaches Out

From the April 1982 Grapevine

I came into AA like most people do, the hard way. I took an overdose and woke up on a detox ward. But let me go back a ways and tell you how I got to this point.

I started drinking at thirteen and continued pretty steadily until I was twenty, when it was pointed out to me that I was drinking a lot. So I decided to quit. But it wasn't that easy; I thought I would go crazy. I didn't want to drink but I couldn't face life without something, so I called a doctor and he gave me some pills. That started my road of drug addiction, which took me on a trip of no return for twelve years, when I finally wound up on that detox ward.
