From the May 1992 magazine.

Whenever I hear someone in a meeting likening alcoholism to being lost in a big black hole, I think back to an experience I had in Agrigento, Sicily, when I physically went down into a real black hole. The physical journey into total blackness was one I shall never forget.

I was still drinking at the time. With a small group of students, I was invited to go down into a shaft sulfur mine which was not open to the public because of many dangers. We had to dress in protective overalls and rubber boots and wear a hardhat with a small light on it. We were all very trusting and followed our guide down almost a mile into the bowels of the earth, complete with the smell of sulfur.
