The Trap Door

It was just before my second anniversary when my husband and I separated. He was getting sober at a sober house, and I was left with the care of our four children. My landlord had lost the house to the bank, which was evicting me. I couldn't afford to rent anyplace else on my welfare grant so I had no choice but to join the ranks of the homeless welfare mothers who put up at a motel in a neighboring town.
