A Change of Heart

Those who knew Richard J. remember how angry he was when he returned to AA in 1988 after five years of bad drinking and destructive living. He'd had eight months sober before.

Richard's anger came out in unconcealed hostility, at first toward AA. He rarely missed a chance to flaunt the group's request that members refrain from vulgar language during meetings. Richard would roll out a string of obscenities to see just who he could rile up. Sometimes it seemed as if he was trying to get thrown out of AA. He didn't succeed. He must have been sent as a test of the other members' tolerance, but they just kept telling him, "Keep coming back."
