Singled Out by Silence

Admitting powerlessness opened up new relationships

When I was a year old, I got an infection that caused me to lose a good portion of my hearing. As a result, I wore a hearing aid and depended on lip-reading as my primary source of communication. I grew up with a lot of shame about my condition, and there were people who took advantage of my hearing loss.
