Sobriety Highlights

Here are some highlights of the past twenty-one plus years: anniversaries celebrated outside a locked meeting room; with the electricity off during a storm; on the beach on a Sunday morning with a few hundred other sober people; in a meeting with 1,200 home group members singing; in a small church basement with five sober people and no singing or applause; in a hospital room with home group members filing in with cards, presents, jokes, stuffed animals, and a cake with candles as the nurses and doctors watched; in a monastery with my sponsor and several sober people from various states singing and applauding; in a foreign country with sober people laughing and singing in a language everyone understood . . . the language of love; in a Young Persons AA Convention with several thousand rowdy, foot-stomping, standing-on-their-chairs young people singing while the music and songs went on.
