Doing Time

Two years into sobriety I was taking a friend to an AA meeting when he said I should get involved in service work. He'd been sober four months, for the third time, and my thought was "Who is he to tell me what to do?" But having learned to listen to all, including newcomers, I said, "I'll give it some thought." During the next week I attended many meetings and heard something about service work at each one. I began to grow restless and feel uneasy. At the end of the week I took the same friend to another meeting, and the speaker said she was going to celebrate her tenth AA birthday the following week. She also said she had found AA while in jail.
