The View from Here: - Each Month a Group of Past Delegates to the General Service Conference Will Talk About the Traditions

Sharing Our Way of Life

Tradition Three: The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.

The long form of Tradition Three states, in part: "Our membership ought to include all who suffer from alcoholism. Hence we may refuse none who wish to recover." My first experience with this Tradition was in 1979. A group I attended in Illinois met in a church school building. One night a member of this group who had a resentment burnt down the building. The overwhelming attitude from group members was to ban the man from all AA meetings in town.
