Youth Enjoying Sobriety

MY FIRST two years in AA were among the most exciting of my life. I was more than middle-aged, like most of my fellow members, and I was very sick and did not know it. I went to many meetings. I always thought I was "not as bad as that"--"that" being anyone whose experience differed from my own. I have since found that most of us used a conveniently adaptable yardstick.

The occasional young person I saw there was usually a child accompanying a member parent, probably with Mother's admonition to "see that your father comes straight home after the meeting." There were not very many of us. We saw the same faces all the time and worried when anyone was absent too long.
