Learning the Tools
My name is Kyle S. I'm seventeen years old and a slowly recovering alcoholic. At the age of about twelve, I began to drink occasionally with friends. As time went on, I came to believe that drinking was something everyone did. As I started drinking, I figured out how the effects of alcohol helped fend off my bad feelings at the time. I was brought up very well in a normal, middle-class family, but there were problems in communication throughout the whole family. Also, there were always high expectations from my father, which I felt I could not achieve. My dad always made me play sports and disciplined me, to the extreme, for everything I did wrong in life. (There was, however, no alcoholic history in my family.)
