A correspondence course in sobriety

Bill F. was a well-educated man. He was a former school teacher and a captain in the U.S. Army. He fought in both the Pacific (where a Japanese soldier blew a chunk out of his butt with a grenade) and European theatres in World War II. After he was discharged from the Army, he came to work for the newspaper where I worked. Bill liked to drink. So did his wife, Alice. After Bill had a few, he loved to pull down his pants and show you his battle wound.
