From Last Gasp to Gratitude
Making good use of disaster
I believe I was born an alcoholic, bodily and mentally different from my fellows. I started stealing gulps of mom's "happy juice" by age six or seven; my first falling-down drunk was at age ten; by age thirteen, I was downing a half quart of bourbon; the first time I almost died from alcohol was at the age of fifteen. Clearly, my life was unmanageable, but I drank on for another thirty years.
