Tradition 7: A Divorce with Dignity

The unexpected payoff of self-support

Nearly twelve years ago, on a hot July night, I crawled into my home group meeting. I was almost three years sober and in the middle of a divorce. I didn't want to be there. It was Traditions night. What could I possibly hear at a Tradition Seven meeting that would help with my confusion and fear during this tumultuous time of my life?

The speaker was an old-timer. Bud began by saying that Tradition Seven went hand-in-hand with the two Traditions before it. He reminded us that Tradition Five speaks of the group's primary purpose, "to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers." I wasn't listening very intently. I was in self-seeking mode, focusing on myself and my divorce.
