Dear Grapevine

My program at work

I OFTEN tell newcomers to pick up the phone and call others in recovery--to get to know more than one or two people in the group, so when they need help they can reach someone.

After several years of sobriety, I forgot to use my own advice. I found myself sitting in the locker room at work crying, feeling as if I could not make it through the day. I didn't call the two people I could've called and felt uncomfortable reaching out to others to whom I had said nothing but "hello" at meetings. I felt alone and desperate. But I realized that there was one I could call upon for help--my Higher Power.
