From the September 2010 magazine.

For an extended time I was unable to speak, and I had to write down everything I wanted to share with the people in my group.

Having to ask for help did not come easily. I would go to my meetings, where everyone knew of the situation. In the beginning I would write a note asking someone to read what I wrote. To my surprise, everyone was more than willing to help. If I went to a meeting and was not sitting near someone who I knew would read for me, I would just sit there and wonder if I could get him or her to be my voice.
