From the December 2010 magazine.

I AM in college at age 53, studying graphic design--something I never thought of doing in my entire life, but something that brings me joy and friendship, My sponsor works as a student liaison and insisted that I try taking one class. Here I am, almost 54, and finally ready to have a college degree in a field that makes me wonder why people pay you to have this much fun.

At one point I was ready to quit. I wasn't good enough, wasn't as talented . . . blah, blah, blah. One of the professors saw me crying and asked what was up. It turned out she knew exactly what to say. "Well, all that might be true or it might not," She said. "Maybe you should quit. But before you do, ask yourself: What's worse, quitting or failing?"
