After making the local news, this former son of a preacher found himself at a meeting in Ohio

I had my first drink the night I graduated from high school in May of 1957 in a small town in Kentucky. My father was the pastor of the largest church in our area and at which the principal of the high school was a very active member.

I would sometimes assist him in his capacity as a math teacher. I had already "gone forward" during the "invitation" at the end of a sermon at a previous church where my father pastored in Indiana and declared that God had called me to be a preacher. And I preached on occasions at my father's church and other churches. The plan for my life was to attend a Baptist college and then a Baptist theological seminary in our state.
