November 2013: The Scoop: Reporter Gets Sober

Finally, he got the story of a lifetime

I was an only child, raised by a hard-working mother and father who sacrificed much and gave generously of their time and energy. Money was tight, but we never missed a meal. And much of what little spare time my parents had was spent with me.

Despite that, I found my childhood, and particularly my teenage years, emotionally painful. I remember rummaging through my parents’ closet looking for the adoption certificate I was sure would be there. I felt like I didn’t fit in anywhere. So when it was time for college, I had only two requirements: It had to offer journalism, which I had already pegged as my future career; and it had to be far away from home. I was already looking for a geographic cure to my living problem.
