November 2013: My Big Weekend

After 40 years, little disappointments don’t get in his way

As a member of the Winnipeg Group, I recently celebrated 40 years of continuous sobriety. I’m getting on in years, separated, with no children, and spend too much time by myself. Though I’m often lonely, I’m not complaining, as I have chosen this way of life. I believe that loneliness is fairly common among AA members, and particularly so as we grow older.

One of the downsides of aging, I find, is that my circle of friends keeps shrinking. There are all sorts of senior organizations that offer activities to their members, but most of these take place in the afternoons. During the day I have lots to do, but evenings are a problem. Prior to retiring, most of my career was spent in sales and I always had to interact with people. Fortunately, there are many AA meetings in our city where I can go and enjoy the fellowship of other AAs. I go early and stay late, which enriches me.
