In August of 1964, I was warned of possible termination by my sales manager in a hotel room in the Southern California desert town of El Centro. This job was my third job since my active duty tour in the Army. Two of those jobs I hads received because I was "Sterling's son".
My father, Sterling, was a highly respected small business owner in the Eastern Washington town of my upbringing. I had left there to fulfill my grandiose ideas of how I wanted to live my life and had settled on San Diego where my dad's younger brother and sister lived.
