AA was there when the prison gates swung open

I AM AN alcoholic who finally gave up, came to believe, made a decision, cleaned house, made amends, and daily seek an improved contact with God as I understand Him, while trying to carry this message and practice these principles in all my affairs. A few years ago, I became an "outside" sponsor to a member of a prison AA group.

I met this fellow at a prison AA meeting. He had been a mean, bitter incorrigible five-time loser in state and Federal prisons. From his late teens to his mid-forties, his life had been violence, capture, sentence, escape, solitary, seven prison units. Alcohol and other drugs were always involved.
