From the July 1986 magazine.

Keeping Our Date

The July 1984 Grapevine told the story of two AAs, an inmate ("Leo") and his outside sponsor ("Ned"), who became friends through the Institutions Correspondence Service. They planned to meet AA's 50th Birthday party, if Leo was out on parole.

We stood in the corridor outside Canadian Customs in Montreal International Airport waiting for "Leo" to emerge. My wife and I had never met him before; had seen only a small snapshot he'd sent. He said he was six foot two and weighed 225 pounds. It was Tuesday, July 2, 1985, and Leo, paroled in August 1984, was not only coming to AA's 50th Anniversary International Convention to keep our date made over a year ago, but also to participate with me in the AA and Prisons workshop.
