Surrendering the Distance Between Us

The other night, a fellow AA member called to ask if I would help lead a meeting at the county jail the following evening. His call came on a day when I had tried and failed to educate the local newspaper cartoonist on an issue involving my employer, and I feared I would soon star in another of his blasts at the company. I felt angry, afraid, and tired. Part of me balked at the request from AA, thinking it came at a bad time. The rest of me knew the connection to alcoholics in a new and challenging setting would do me good. I said yes.
