It's the First Drink

I was sober almost five years and I was being released from prison. I was concerned about my ability to stay sober once I got out. Our AA group, on the outside, the Candle-lighters, had been a big help to me. I hoped that if I followed the Steps to the best of my ability, I could make it, one day at a time. But I was a three-time loser. The difference was, this time I had AA to help me.

An old friend of mine from my drinking days had agreed to meet me at the gate. But still I was uneasy. I had very little faith in myself. My friend had been sober eight years and I felt that just maybe, if he could do it, I could do it.
