From the July 1997 magazine.

You Going Tonight?

When I attended my first meeting in March 1994, I wasn't serious about AA or sobriety and didn't believe that other people were either--not in here anyway. You see, I'm in prison, serving my tenth year of a thirty-year sentence.

I went to my first meeting not knowing what to expect. My first thought was, "I hope none of my cell-partners see me going over here." It was strange that just the night before I was at my window getting high, paranoid that someone might walk in or that the guards might come around to make a security check. I'd done this a thousand times before, however, so it was cool.
