ON THE OUTSIDE

Since AA's beginning, members have brought the message of hope and recovery into jails and prisons. In August 1947, the AA Grapevine published an account of Alcoholics Anonymous in prison: "The average AA member may be interested to learn how AA can flourish and grow in prison.... Each speaker, as he unfolds his life story, is listened to attentively by all and there is no scoffing.... These men see that the speakers are not looking for sympathy but are gaining courage through AA to face life again when they are released."
