Taken all together, alcoholic beverages are the lifeblood of a tremendous industry.

Licensed Beverage Industries, a trade group which keeps tabs on such things, estimates that the "gross industry product" in 1966 was $17.3 billion. That's how much the booze business contributed to the national economy in wages, purchases of goods and services, and taxes.
