Illness": an Easy Out?

TORONTO--Alcoholics must be confronted directly with their problem and must be made to feel responsible for their actions, a University of Western Ontario psychiatrist said.

Dr. F. Gordon Johnson said the publicly popular view of alcoholism as an uncontrollable disease had given the alcoholic a hiding place for his responsibility. "He can shelter behind the belief that since he has 'alcoholism' he is not accountable for his actions," the assistant professor told the 19th annual meeting of the Canadian Psychiatric Association.
