Nonstarting Cars for Drunks?
WASHINGTON--When you walk out of the bowling alley after a few belts with the boys along about 1975, you may not be able to start your car.
It'll have this new gadget on it that the National Highway Safety Bureau now refers to as an "alcohol protection and interlock device." That means that if you're stoned, your car won't start.
Of course, not all cars will be equipped with such a device, explained Roger H, Compton, head of NHSB's accident-avoidance standard-setting activity, in an interview here. It'll only be for chronic drinkers.
