'Civilized' Drinkers

Physicians told the annual congress of the National Committee Against Alcoholism at Versailles that France led the world in ailments attributable to alcohol, that drinking was a major cause of traffic fatalities, and that 15 percent of men and 5 percent of women in France drink to a dangerous degree.

A former Health Minister, Bernard Chenot, said the disease cost France more than four times the amount collected from taxes on wine and spirits.
