A 24-Hour Plan

VANCOUVER, B.C.--Instead of charging a driver whom he suspects of being under the influence of drink, a [British Columbia] policeman may ask him to hand over his license voluntarily. If he agrees, the driver is sent home--without his car--and the license is kept at police headquarters, where it can be reclaimed 24 hours later.

If the driver refuses to surrender his license, he faces possible court prosecution. Most drivers prefer to lose their license for 24 hours. No files are kept of such incidents, and there are no court records.
