WASHINGTON, D.C.--In the world of illicit drug use, 1972 may well become the year of the barbiturate, an expert told the Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Dr. Sidney Cohen of the University of California, Los Angeles, is a former director of the Division of Narcotic Addiction and Drug Abuse of the National Institute of Mental Health.
Dr. Cohen said the "downers"--the street name for barbiturates--have in some respects a greater potential for danger than other classes of drugs, including heroin.
