"Alcoholics become strangers to their closest friends," said Drew Ellis, Director of Clinical Studies, Bureau of Alcoholic Rehabilitation (BAR), Avon Park, Fla. Ellis explained that alcoholics "tend to fail to have rapport in their interpersonal relationships--they are reluctant to express their emotional feelings. For this reason, the alcoholic is basically a very lonely individual."
