LEWISTON, N.Y.--"If I can stop after a few drinks, I don't see why they can't."

Expressed by the majority of social drinkers toward the minority of alcoholics, such an attitude lies near the heart of public misunderstanding of alcoholism, according to a state expert on the problem. Robert Burda, program director of the State Department of Mental Hygiene's Division on Alcoholism, spoke at the opening session of an eight-part series at Lewiston-Porter High School.
