In a Harris poll, people in 1,590 representative American households were asked various questions to determine current public attitudes toward alcoholism. Opinions on the alcoholic employee were checked with this query: "Some people say that those who drink on the job are sick and should be helped. Others say that sick problem drinkers put an unfair load onto other employees, and should be fired. Which way do you feel personally? Should problem drinkers be helped or fired?"
