A UPI story by Patricia McCormack on industrial alcoholism programs noted a campaign to reverse a less enlightened management attitude. At Merrill Lynch. Pierce, Fenner and Smith, the program includes discussions of the company policy on alcoholism. "A written policy," says Don Sandin, program administrator, "is necessary because of the 'unwritten policy' which was all too well known throughout the organization. This was: The company will award sick leave, pay vacations, and promotion to any employee who can successfully conceal his alcoholism from the attention of management. When the employee can no longer conceal it, his employment will be terminated."
