On the DWI Front

Penalties [for drunken driving in the U.S.] are not severe in comparison with other countries. Chances are about three in five that if picked up on a DWI charge in this country, you will be fined only about $50 and perhaps have your license suspended for six months. But in Norway, for instance, anyone convicted of DWI gets a 21-day prison term and must wait from one to 10 years to get his license back. In South Africa, they give you 10 years and a $2,000 fine. In Finland, convicted drunken drivers must work at manual labor for between one and six months. In Russia, they merely say, "You are not permitted to drive any more."
