Is License-Lifting the Answer?
NEW YORK, N.Y.--The courts in New York State are being far too lenient in allowing intoxicated drivers to escape the strict penalties of the state's drunken-driving statute, the State Police and the State Controller have charged.
During one recent six-month period, Controller Arthur Levitt said, police reports show that 37% of individuals who were arrested for drunken driving succeeded in having the charges reduced or dismissed by the courts.
