U.S. Attacks Politeness

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) features a "Don't be polite" theme in one of [its] public service messages on television.

"If you know somebody who's drinking too much, don't be polite," says Harry C. Bell, NIAAA associate director for Public Affairs. "Tell him he's drinking too much or she's drinking too much. Don't be polite. Interfere. Be a buttinsky. If you saw a growth on your friend's cheek and thought it might be cancerous, you'd recommend he go to a good doctor, wouldn't you? It's as simple as that with alcoholism."
