According to counselor Fran Fitch, consultant to the Batterers Program at the House of Ruth in Baltimore and a member of the University of Maryland faculty, 70% of the men who attend the House of Ruth group-counseling program for batterers have severe alcohol problems. In addition, 19% of the battered women involved in couples therapy at the emergency shelter also are alcohol abusers.
