PORTLAND, OREGON--Weekend and holiday shifts, especially, they keep me awake all night--the ones who don't make it home, and those who aren't safe even there.
The worst come by ambulance--the critical trauma cases, for which we have to get everyone out of bed. Others are brought by family or friends, horns blaring at the entrance. Many simply walk, or limp, or stagger in.
