I Got Out of the God Business

FOURTEEN years ago, I attended my first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. I was looking for freedom from fear and alcohol. The struggle has often been discouraging, but worth every minute of it. Some of the sober moments have been pure, undisguised hell, but what I had before was infinitely worse.

If I go back to drinking, at best I may only have a bad hangover. At worst, my brain may go soggy, leaving me a vegetable for life. Worth it? For one lousy drink?
