A Power Beyond the Mind

The Steps were translated into terms that I, an atheist, could understand

IN THE DAYS after I first came to AA, I thought often of what Thomas Carlyle said upon hearing that a certain lady had declared, "I accept the universe." "Egad," he said, "she'd better!"

These lines from John Donne also came frequently to my mind: "No man is an island, entire of itself. . .any man's death diminishes me. . .never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
