When I was in my forties, I came to the startling realization that I am an alcoholic. I joined the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous.

I should not have been startled by my alcoholism because my late father, an ambassador and international statesman, was also an alcoholic. In fact, he was the first member of my family--going back at least fifteen generations--to take a drink of alcohol.
