Hints On Avoiding the First Drink

The eighth of a series of "Beginners' Meetings"--to run from time to time--for newcomers to AA sobriety.

AT a recent closed meeting I took some notes which might be worth sharing with you. The general theme of that meeting concerned a wide variety of helpful suggestions for maintaining sobriety, particularly on how to avoid that first drink when the thought of it comes to mind or when it is offered by friend or foe.

All of us agreed that there is no real substitute for the daily practice of the Twelve Suggested Steps to insure continued sobriety. The Steps are not only valued suggestions but truly are an authenticated record of the manner in which thousands of other alcoholics have successfully lived lengthy sober lives. None of us would want to attempt an improvement of this successful formula.
